Imagine spending thousands of dollars on a brand new vehicle, with a well-made interior, and very nice beige carpeting over the entire floor surface without any car floor mats. You are extremely proud of your new car, and soon you invite a friend to go for a ride in your brand new vehicle, and you go to pick him up. When you arrive at the location, you find that he has apparently walked through a mud puddle and has mud dripping from his boots. He steps into the vehicle, and immediately you have a stain in your brand new flooring.
After dropping him off from your ride, you return home to attempt cleaning your flooring. Unfortunately, the mud is all over the carpeting, and you have no way to get a carpet cleaning machine into the vehicle in order to clean it. For years, vehicles had simply had metal floors on their interior. If a mess was made, then one could simply use a broom, or even a garden hose, to wash dirt and debris from the inside of their vehicle. But after a few years, automakers and manufacturers began to put carpeted flooring over the entire floor surface of automobiles. This added to the comfort and the aesthetics of the vehicle, as well as helped to dampen the noise made by the engine, and noise made by the tires and bumps on the road.

One problem, however, was that when a person got into the vehicle with wet or dirty shoes, then you would be left with a spot on the carpet that could only be cleaned by physically scrubbing the floor from the inside of the vehicle. However, eventually someone came up with the idea of using car floor mats in the floor of the vehicle. Car floor mats could be made out of plastic or carpet, and using one would potentially make cleaning messes out of a vehicle with carpeted flooring to be a much simpler task than it had ever been before.
With the use of removable car floor mats, the factory installed carpeted flooring could be easily protected. Not only did this do significant work to ease the process of cleaning the interior of the vehicle, but the very nature of the removability helped to protect the value of the vehicle. Previously, when oily dirt or staining beverages were spilled on the carpet, the spot was relatively permanent. With the invention of removable car floor mats, one could simply remove and clean the spot, or replace the mat altogether. By doing this, the interior would remain in good condition, and therefore resale value would be better preserved.
